Extractables and Leachables
Event Details

Conference Overview

The 7th Annual Extractables & Leachables Summit 2027 is a premier two day global virtual forum bringing together biopharma leaders, medical device specialists, analytical scientists and regulatory experts to address the next wave of compliance, analytical precision and safety evaluation in E&L science.

Day 1 focuses on global regulatory alignment, cutting edge analytical workflows and digital innovation, offering practical insights into post implementation compliance for USP <665>/<1665>, final adoption pathways for ICH Q3E and evolving FDA/EMA expectations. Attendees will examine Non-Targeted Analysis (NTA) for identifying unknown peaks, in silico toxicology modeling, cumulative exposure methodologies across complex supply chains, food contact material crossover strategies and green chemistry initiatives in laboratory operations.

Day 2 concentrates on bioprocessing systems, combination products and advanced modalities, addressing single use technology qualification, revised ISO 10993-18 frameworks for medical devices and real world case studies in cell and gene therapies (CGT). Special sessions cover mitigating secondary leachable risks in sensitive biologics, PFAS regulatory risk profiling across packaging and process components, route specific safety evaluations and applying the Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) for sensitization and immunotoxicology.

Summit Agenda

◆  Post implementation case studies of USP /, ICH Q3E alignment.

◆  In September 2026, the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) published an updated Stimuli article in Pharmacopeial Forum (PF) addressing the use of a system suitability mixture to support chromatographic screening for organic extractables and leachables. Building on the original proposal published in 2023, the update incorporates findings and recommendations from a USP-organized round-robin study involving numerous E&L laboratories.
Our laboratories participated in the round-robin study and have since performed additional experimental work to evaluate the updated compound lists using headspace GC/MS, direct-injection GC/MS, and LC/MS. This presentation will discuss the key changes in the updated proposal, their practical implications for E&L screening, and findings from our recent laboratory evaluations.

◆  Leveraging Food Contact Material (FCM) testing data for material selection and low risk container closures.

◆  Evaluating cumulative leachable exposures across multi stage biomanufacturing lines and complex packaging.

◆  Establishing extractable to leachable correlations to reduce routine leachable testing during stability studies.

◆  AI algorithms and machine learning tools for automated spectral matching and early material screening.

◆  Micro LC and solvent reduction strategies to optimize laboratory efficiency and lower environmental impact.

◆  Qualification, sterility assurance and risk based testing protocols under USP for biomanufacturing platforms.

◆  Regulatory expectations and revised ISO 10993-18 analytical frameworks for device associated E&L characterization.

◆  Industry experiences addressing E&L challenges in biologics, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and Cell & Gene Therapies (CGT).

◆  Evaluating reactive leachables causing protein aggregation, immunogenicity or degradation in sensitive platforms.

◆  Migration studies and testing strategies for PFAS in packaging, tubing and SUS.

◆  Targeted risk assessments and local toxicity evaluations for inhalation, parenteral, transdermal and ophthalmic routes.

◆  Applying Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) and consortium database insights (e.g., ELSIE) for sensitization risks.

◆  Polymer design, surface coatings and material science advances to minimize leachables in drug delivery systems.
